Fiberglass cast

A Fiberglass cast is used as a protective layer which provides complete healing to a broken bone in any part of the body. Small and big accidents results in breakage, or generally known as fractured, bones.

To heal, the broken bone has to be intact in the same position for a few days until healing occurs naturally. For this to happen, you need to have strong support to your broken part so that no stress is caused on it when you move your body. A fiberglass leg cast will keep intact the broken bone area and fully cover it while not allowing any movement. It is then over this fiberglass cast than you might want to apply a waterproof cast liner if you want to swim or take a shower without needing a big plastic bag over it. Alternatively, if your doctor did not put a waterproof liner on your cast and you want to have the ability to swim despite having a cast you might want to look into purchasing a waterproof cast cover on amazon. The fiberglass cast is applied to the injured hand or arm or at the place where the bone has been fractured or broken. Fiberglass cast is a mixture of porcelain or plaster of Paris and water. It is applied while wet and then allowed to dry.

Though they are infection free, sometimes with the prevailing temperatures you may face infections or even skin breakdowns. In order to prevent these, you must follow a few precautions which will help you overcome potential problems.

The foremost important thing that you will have to keep in mind is that it is allowed to dry for at least an hour after it is applied. Fiberglass cast when applied causes swelling to the portion it is applied. In order to overcome this, you must apply the cast above the chest level when on pillows for 2 days so that swelling does not occur. The next step in taking care of your new fiberglass casting is to apply some ice packs for the first two to three days near the injured area and around the casting so that the swelling will not spread to the rest of the areas. While you apply these ice packs, you also need to take care that they do not come in contact with the fiberglass casting as this will make the casting wet.

At the very least, if you don’t have a waterproof cast lining than cover your fiberglass casting with a plastic cover before you go for a bath. If your casting becomes wet, you need to dry it off immediately with the help of a blower. Now that you have understood the most important precautions, you can now protect yourself and your fiberglass casting without any tension and with hassle free maintenance.
